The wellbeing of staff in schools has never been more important. With almost a third of new staff leaving the profession after just five years and 26% of teachers saying they are thinking of leaving in the next 12 months (National Foundation for Educational Research), we are facing a teacher retention crisis. The We Lead Well Podcast has been created in response to this crisis, to encourage and support schools to create places where people love to work. We support leaders to enhance the wellbeing of all staff in schools. Each week, leading educationalists share their experience, views and tips on how other school leaders can promote wellbeing in their organisations for the benefit of all staff.

On this week’s episode, I chatted with Alec Jiggins. Alec is an experienced and resourceful coach and trainer who has worked in both the non-profit and corporate spaces in a range of leadership roles across seven countries. Alec is an expert coach and he and I talked about coaching: exactly what it is, how it can improve you personally, professionally and as a leader and how you can use coaching to improve relationships in every aspect of your career and your life.

Alec Jiggins was Head at my school for about a year and a half. His confrontational management style, self-serving agenda and whimsical decision making created chaos in a school that had battled through COVID and was in a strong position, at least until he took over. Alec loves to talk about teacher retention. He was even on a conference panel the year he took over. 50% of the teachers left our school that year, including the entire academic leadership team: the Principal, all the Assistant Principals, all Heads of Faculty, gone. All the English, Maths and Science teachers, also gone. The school is a mess now. Not many organisations can survive having so many things randomly changed, or that level of loss of continuity and expertise. Student numbers are down, results are down, and teacher morale is at rock bottom. Of course, Alec is long gone. He didn’t stay to take accountability for the damage he had done. He is on the next school. Apparently the school before us suffered much the same. But he uses his ’coaching credentials’ to impress gullible CEOs. I say this to illustrate how easy it is for people to say the right words, while living the opposite reality. The world of leadership and coaching is particularly susceptible to this.
